What Is Prayer: Psalm 54:2
Prayer is spending time with God as you express your heart to Him. It is not a one way activity. When we speak to God in prayer, He listens. God speaks to our hearts and we listen to that still small voice.
Prayer is seeking and finding, searching with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13
God listens when we pray IN JESUS NAME, so we need to pay attention to what we are praying. (Matthew 6:7)That is why we must understand the types of prayers we can pray
Different Types of Prayer
Thanksgiving (1 Thes. 5:18)
When we pray we need to give thanks to God for all things in our life. Being thankful is being grateful for God’s protection, His provision, His blessings, and most of all for His Son. Sometimes things aren’t going well in our lives and frankly we don’t feel like praying let alone giving thanks, but we are commanded to give thanks in all circumstances. Philippians 4:6 and Colossians 4:2 tell us to pray with thanksgiving. Psalm 95 and 100 tell us to enter into the presence of God with thanksgiving. When Christ prayed He often gave thanks (Matthew 15:36; 26:26, 27; Luke 22:19). Praying with thanksgiving should be a regular part of our prayer life
Petition
The prayer of petition is when we ask God for the things we need, or think we need, in our life.  Petitions are usually self oriented … give us our daily bread, give us the things we need to survive:  a roof over our heads, employment etc.  When we pray a prayer of petition we are presenting our personal needs to our Heavenly Father, trusting Him to provide.
Intercession
To intercede means to plead or mediate on behalf of another person. Intercessory prayer means praying earnestly for the needs of others, and seeking God's will for their life. We are called to intercede for others, just as Jesus is interceding for us (Hebrews 7: 25). .  It is love on its knees in prayer, for others. Genesis 18:22-33 (Abraham); 1 Kings 18:41-46 (Elijah);
Prevailing Prayer
This type of prayer is fervent, insistent and consistent until a breakthrough takes place.  This can be a prayer for ourselves, our families, or for someone else. Example Believing for emotional or physical healing.
Consecration
When we pray a prayer of consecration, we are committing and dedicating of our life to God’s use.  To some this is a scary prayer because they are turning over their own personal will to that of the Lord. Jesus prayed a prayer of consecration  in Luke 22:42
Agreement/Corporate:
The Biblical principle that governs this type of prayer underscores the power of unity and harmony among Christians Matthew 18:19,20
When we pray the prayer of agreement, we cannot be casual in choosing a prayer partner.  We need to pray with someone whose basic viewpoints are the same as ours and who agrees with us on spiritual matters.
Warfare
A prayer of warfare battles against the spiritual forces of evil.  We should pray for alertness and insight into Satan’s tactics in our lives and in the lives of others. Ephesians 6:12
A prayer of warfare also involves binding, loosing and using of Christs authority with all boldness.over It is before witnessing, teaching, or during periods demonic attack

Prayer of Authority.( Binding and Loosing)
This prayer is found in Matthew 18:18-19. Jesus says: "'Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.'"
There are additional steps that will help in prayers
Carve out a specific time to pray each day.
Pick a quiet place where you can be alone with God.
You will also find a special blessing if you begin your time by reading the Bible
Prayer needs to be personal.  We need to pray for ourselves and for others by name.
