World-class universities, better career prospects and a dynamic campus experience attract a vast number of African students to study abroad. Although the advantages of studying abroad are galore, the high cost remains one of the major drawbacks. As a result study abroad aspirants look out for options that will help them decrease their financial burden of which scholarships are the most preferred and sought after. In spite of the availability of a number of scholarships for African Students to study abroad, the knowledge of the funding options is often unknown to the prospective international students. Hence, we bring to you a list of some of the important scholarship programs available for African students at some of the most popular study abroad destinations.
Harvard Fellowships in Sustainability Science
The Sustainability Science Program at Harvard University offers doctoral, post-doctoral, and mid-career fellowships in Sustainability Science. The Sustainability Science Fellowship is based on a 12-month stipend of $55,000 for post-doctoral fellows, $28,000 for doctoral fellows, and a negotiated amount for mid-career fellows depending on their citizenship, current salary, current employment location, seniority, and other sources of support ($35,000 maximum).
Rhodes Scholarships at Oxford University for International Students
The Rhodes Scholarships are postgraduate awards supporting exceptional all-round students at the University of Oxford. Established in the will of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, the Rhodes is the oldest and perhaps the most prestigious international scholarship program in the world. A Rhodes scholarship covers all University and College fees, the university application fee, a personal stipend for living expenses (£13,658 per annum 2014-15), and economy class airfare to and from Oxford at the commencement and conclusion of the scholarship.
Eldred-Waverley Scholarship at Linacre College
The Eldred-Waverley Scholarship at Linacre College was established in 2012. It funds students from sub-Saharan Africa to study the MSc African Studies at Oxford. The scholarship will cover 100% of University and college fees, a grant for living costs (of at least £10,397) and a return flight from your home country to UK. Awards are made for the full duration of your fee liability for the agreed course.
Rotary International Peace Fellowships
Each year, Rotary selects up to 100 individuals from around the world to receive fully funded academic fellowships to pursue a Certificate Program or Masters Degree program related to peace and conflict resolution and prevention at one of the participating peace centers. The Rotary Peace Fellowship includes: tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, internship/field study expenses.
Fulbright Foreign Student Program in USA
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables graduate students, young professionals, and artists from abroad to research and study in the United States for one year or longer at U.S. universities or other appropriate institutions. Generally, the grant funds tuition, airfare, a living stipend, and health insurance, etc. The Fulbright program provides funding for the duration of the study.
MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program for Africa
The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is a $500 million, 10-year initiative to educate and prepare young people – particularly from Africa – to lead change and make a positive social impact in their communities. The Scholars Program provides young people from economically disadvantaged communities who have demonstrated academic talent and leadership potential with access to quality and relevant education. The Program serves an estimated 15,000 young people at the secondary and university levels.
Schwarzman Scholars
Designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders, Schwarzman Scholars is the first scholarship created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st Century. Whether in politics, business or science, the success of future leaders around the world will depend upon an understanding of China’s role in global trends.Enrolling the inaugural class in 2016, the program will give the world’s best and brightest students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and professional networks through a one-year Master’s Degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing – one of China’s most prestigious universities.
Australia Awards in Africa
Australia Awards, a cornerstone of the Australian Government’s development assistance program for Africa, provide access to postgraduate education, training and professional development opportunities for suitably qualified Africans from eligible countries. On their return to the workplace, Australia Awards Alumni are expected to contribute actively to development in their home countries. Award types include: Australian Awards Scholarships, to undertake higher degree studies in Australia at Masters level and the Australia Awards – Africa Fellowships, to undertake short-term, targeted professional training courses, in Australia and/or in Africa, in a range of development-focused sectors.
The University of Edinburgh Southern African Scholarships
The University of Edinburgh offers two scholarships for postgraduate study in any subject offered by the University to students from Southern African countries. One of the scholarships is available for a one-year Master’s degree programme and the other scholarship for a three year PhD degree programme. The scholarship covers the overseas rate of tuition fee and University accommodation for the duration of the postgraduate degree programme.
Westminster African Education Scholarships
The Africa Education scholarship is intended to benefit an education professional involved in higher education in sub-Saharan Africa. The scholarships cover full tuition fee award, accommodation at International Students House, living expenses and flights to and from London.
Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships
The Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships full-fee scholarships for international full-time taught postgraduate students who are currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa. The scholarships cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year.
DRD Scholarships for Sub-Saharan Africans
The DRD offers a limited number of DAAD merit scholarships per year for applicants from Sub-Saharan African countries with an excellent academic record, to pursue development-related Masters and PhD studies.  Scholarships include monthly allowances of 650 Euro for Master candidates and 900 Euro for PhD candidates plus travel allowances.
United Nations University Scholarships for Developing Country Students
The Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) Scholarship is available for outstanding applicants from developing countries who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance and who are granted admissions to UNU-ISP. The JFUNU scholarship covers the full tuition fees, and provides a monthly allowance of 150,000 JPY* for living expenses for a maximum of 24 months. The scholarship covers travel costs to and from Japan, visa handling fees, and health/accident insurance costs must be covered by the student.   The tuition fees are fully waived for the scholarship recipients.
Wells Mountain Foundation Scholarships
These are need-based international scholarships for students from developing countries (including African nations) to gain funding for university at home and abroad. The foundation awards 20-25 scholarships per year, which range from $300 to $3000, which may be used towards tuition and fees, books, room rents and meals.
Africa London Nagasaki (ALN) Fund
Provides graduate scholarships for African scientists to gain funding for a master’s degree in an area related to disease control in Africa. Scholarship winners can choose to study in the UK at London’s Institute of Tropical Medicine, the London School of the Hygiene and Tropical Medicine or Nagasaki University in Japan.
